Sunflower meal is the product left after pressing the oil from sunflower seeds. It is a high-calorie and protein-rich feed ingredient containing a significant amount of protein, fats and amino acids. It is used mainly in livestock, poultry and fish farming as an important element of a complete diet.
Sunflower meal has the following chemical composition:
- Protein: about 38-40%. - Fat: about 7-9%. - Carbohydrates: about 15-20%. - Mineral substances: iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, etc.
Rich protein, including essential amino acids, is necessary for the growth of muscle tissue and bone formation. In addition, the fats contained contribute to rapid weight gain and good animal performance.
Sunflower meal is best used in combination with other feedstuffs such as grain, grass pellets or silage. Inclusion in animal diets should be done in stages, starting with low dosages and gradually increasing to the optimum concentration. The average recommended ratio is 10-15% of the total daily ration.
It is optimal to introduce meal into mashings, combined feeds or special premixes. The main rule when introducing a new product into the diet is to control the reaction of animals to the new food, monitor appetite and health of the stock.
